James Coburn & Steve McQueen
Hollywood stars and friends James Coburn and Steve McQueen were both friends of Bruce Lee and trained Jeet Kune Do with him regularly. Coburn was seen as the mellow one while McQueen was seen as the “tough” one.
Kareem Adbul Jabbar
The 7′ 2″ former college basketball star originally trained in Aikido before being introduced to Bruce Lee when he moved to Southern California. The two hit it off due to their similar outlooks and Jabbar went on to star in Game of Death as the guardian of the final floor of the pagoda.
During the late 1960s Roman Polanski had just married Sharon Tate and was a rising star on the directing stage and it was around this time that he also met and became friends with Bruce Lee.
George Lazenby is most famously one of those lucky enough to step into the shoes of suave British spy James Bond. However after that his career faltered and he moved to Hong Kong to make Kung Fu movies. Lazenby trained with Lee to understand what was wanted from him but Lee’s untimely death meant the scenes were never shot.
James Garner is a legend of both small and big screen. He is most well known for playing Jim Rockford the quick-witted PI from the The Rockford Files and in more recent years he would have been known to a younger audience for playing the older version of Ryan Gosling’s character in The Notebook. He was also a keen Jeet Kune Do practitioner. He was one of Bruce lees private students.
Everyone knows Chuck Norris fought Bruce Lee on screen in the colosseum in Rome in one of the best scenes from all Bruce Lee’s movies. However off screen they also spent time training together. Chuck says they never had a proper fight – just some sparring – so we’ll never know who would have won in real life!
